Southern cabbage is a side dish that is super simple but packs a ton of flavor. For a traditional southern-style Thanksgiving, Marrekus Wilkes of Cooks with Soul considers it an essential side dish. He likes to cook it slowly with a ham hock, all-purpose seasoning such as Cooks with Soul Soul Dust (or your favorite brand), and a tablespoon of crushed red pepper flakes — but feel free to start with less heat if you like.   • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 pound ham hock (whole or in pieces, or 6-8 ounces diced, thick-sliced ham or bacon)
  • 2 pounds green cabbage (rough chopped)
  • 1 white onion (small, sliced)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Simply Organic All-Purpose Seasoning (or other all-purpose seasoning such as Cooks with Soul’s Soul Dust, plus more to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (or 1 tablespoon, if you like a lot of heat)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup reduced sodium chicken broth

    Directions

    1. Preheat a 5- to 6-quart Dutch oven or large pot over medium heat. Add oil and ham hocks, bacon, or diced ham and cook until browned, turning meat occasionally, 8-10 minutes.
    2. Toss in cabbage, onion, all-purpose seasoning, red pepper flakes, and sugar, stirring to combine thoroughly. Add broth and reduce heat to medium-low.
    3. Cover pot and cook, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender and lightly browned, around 1 hour. Cut off the skin from the ham hock and discard it and the bone. Cut the meat into chunks and return to the cabbage. Taste and add more all-purpose seasoning if you like.
