Healthy snack

Health-wise, chickpeas (a.k.a. garbanzo beans) are loaded with fiber, zinc, folate, protein, and a host of other vital nutrients. There’s a reason why this legume is a staple in so many countries — in particular, throughout the Mediterranean and South Asia (India, Pakistan). Crunchy roasted chickpeas are good for vegans, vegetarians, the gluten-free, and omnivores alike. If you dry-roast them, they’re a pretty low-calorie, savory snack as well.

Tasty snack

Taste-wise, chickpeas are a blank slate, kind of like potato chips. They give you the opportunity to play with different flavors to come up with various snack recipes. You can season them with plain sea salt and parmesan cheese, or spice them up with chili powder. The recipe below, for instance, includes smoked paprika (flavor, but no spice!) and garlic powder, but the possibilities are more or less endless. Buffalo chickpeas! Curried chickpeas! Shawarma chickpeas! Wherever it is your taste buds hail from — be it somewhere in Asia, Mexico, or the American South — there’s bound to be a roasted chickpea recipe that tastes like home. Even sweet tooths can get their due, with a cinnamon-and-sugar treatment, or even chocolate.

Practical snack

Practicality-wise, roasted chickpeas have a serious edge on almost anything that comes in a bag — no crumbs. And other than dry or canned chickpeas, chances are you have all the ingredients you need on hand already. So get roasting chickpeas. Your children will thank you—just as soon as they finish their new favorite after-school snack.

  • 2 cups chickpeas (dried and cooked or two 15-oz. cans, skins removed)
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt (table salt is fine)
  • 1/16 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/16 teaspoon garlic powder

    Directions

    1. Preheat oven to 425º F
    2. Pat dry chickpeas with a paper towel. They should be completely dry (and be sure to remove any loose skins).
    3. Toss chickpeas with olive oil, add seasonings and toss again to coat.

    A great snack/appetizer! Turned out very crunchy after baking for 15 minutes twice, so I may try keeping them in for slightly shorter next time.

    Great! Perfect snack for busy times. I roast a little longer. But this measurement for spices is nonsense. Does it mean 1 1/2 tsp? I’ve assumed so. Please clear this up.

    Turned out great - still a little soft, roasting slower and longer might give a more consistent crunch. But so good!

    These turned out okay. Did them a second time fixing all the mistakes and they were perfect. The first gripe I have is drying these with paper towels. Very wasteful, you have an oven that'll dry them. I also reduced the oven temp to 375F and cooked them without any seasoning for 30 mins, checking on them often. After they were nice and dry, I took them out and seasoned with oil and seasonings. Then they went in for another 10 mins. All of them were golden brown and super crunchy.

    Perfect. I had a bag of 500g of chickpeas, so I divided half and half to go in the oven, and the other to go in the air fryer 200•C. The oven turned out great, but in the air fryer was spectacular! It is worth trying!

    These are a great snack. I switched it up a bit by using dry ranch seasoning for a batch and cheddar popcorn seasoning for another batch. Also, these come out great in the air fryer.

    Tasty and quick to prepare and cook! My 3 Year old even helped 😁
    These we’re pretty tasty, but definitely don’t bake for more than 20 mins. I baked them according to the directions and they came out somewhat burnt. The ones that weren’t burnt tasted good though.

    Great recipe, The spicing possibilities are endless. Took a batch to a TV rugby game with buddies in South Africa (no live rugby due COVID) they disappeared faster than any of the other snacks on offer!
