Once you try this classic Chinese takeout dish at home, you'll never go back. Along the way, Jet teaches you principles of Asian sauces, making tempura batter, and deep frying safely at home.


  • 2 inches fresh ginger root
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1/2 cup oyster sauce
  • 1 Tbsp. hoisin sauce
  • 3 oz. orange juice
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 oz. white vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp. soy sauce
  • 1/2 Tbsp. smoked paprika
  • 1 drop red food coloring (optional)
  • 1 Tbsp. cornstarch
  • 1 Tbsp. water (for sauce)
  • 1 cup cold water (for tempura mix)
  • 1 1/2 cups tempura batter mix (aka tempura flour, for batter)
  • 1 cup tempura batter mix (aka tempura flour, for dredging chicken)
  • 2 lb. boneless skinless chicken thighs (trimmed of fat, patted dry, cut into 2-inch dice)
  • 1 1/2 qt. vegetable oil (more or less as needed)
  • 1 cup scallions (cut into 2 inch pieces)
  • steamed rice (for serving)

    It was okay I would go lighter on the vinegar and smoked paprika next time as I feel they overpowered the other flavors.

    Not the quickest meal but oh so tasty! The sauce was so good and better than any store bought bottle I’ve ever tried. I’d definitely make this again.

    turned out great. Didn't have oysters sauce so I had to substitute with more hoisin and Teriyaki sauce and also added some orange oil in the sauce as well to up the orange flavor. Batter need to be loosened a little bit to not make it too thick for our liking, but it definitely quenched the fix for orange chicken. Also added roasted cashews...worth it.

    Delicious!!! Mouth dripping and flavorful dish that could serve a family of five. I made extra sauce and it wasn't enough; so next time I will triple the count to allow dipping or drizzle. I made three dishes from this chef and they all turn out incredible.

    I made it last night for dinner and my whole family loved it! I couldn’t find tempura batter mix, so I used the cornstarch/flour mix and it turned out well. It did take awhile though, so I wouldn’t plan on cooking this if you don’t have a ton of time
