It's National Tater Tot Day this Sunday, February 2 (and I heard something about a football game as well). In celebration, I'm going to go ahead and declare Tater Tots one of the greatest inventions of the 20th Century. These little barrels of fried potato fun have been celebrated in school cafeterias and on American dinner tables since the 1950s. Crispy on the outside with soft potato on the inside — all without the help of a deep fryer at home. Not only have they been keeping kids happy (adults, too), but they're also an example of making use of food scraps to reduce food waste. They were originally designed to use up the bits of potato left over from cutting french fries. I think you might agree that leftovers have never tasted SO good.
In the past few years, tots have gotten more prominent on bar menus — either on their own or in a magical mixture. There's a bar in San Francisco that serves bacon-wrapped tot poutine, and politicians are even turning to tots to woo voters. Are you hungry yet? If you are, stick around for inventive ways to turn your tots into a glorious meal that will have the family begging for seconds.
Classic Tater Tot Casserole
As the name suggests, you can find most of the ingredients of a classic casserole in this recipe: meat, cheese, and cream of mushroom soup. That's it. The meat this recipe calls for is ground beef which you brown before mixing in the soup and cheese. Put the mixture in a casserole dish and top it with tots and it's ready to bake. If you want to save time and dirty fewer dishes, brown the meat in a castiron skillet and let it double as the baking dish.
Tater Tot Casserole
This recipe sees the classic recipe ingredients and raises it an onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and mixed vegetables. While the classic wins for its ease and simplicity, this one wins for the balance that the vegetables lend it.
Bacon and Eggs Tater Tot Casserole
This recipe should be called "Breakfast FTW" because it will win over everyone in the family with just one bite. The method is similar to a savory bread pudding, but instead of bread, you use tots accompanied by cheese, green onions, and, of course, bacon.
Cheesy Meatball Tater Tot Casserole
If you're not into the texture of the classic recipe, this recipe takes the ground beef and forms it into a meatball, and instead of using the traditional cream of mushroom soup, this blogger makes a béchamel (or white sauce) so if you have an aversion to mushrooms, this might be the recipe that suits you.
Texas Tater Tot Casserole
There's one thing a Texas Tater Tot Casserole has that the others don't: brisket. Of course, no one would expect you to make a brisket just so you can make this casserole, rather it's a way to incorporate leftovers into a spectacular meal. It's one more way to help reduce food waste deliciously.
Cheeseburger Tater Tot Casserole
The ingredients for this one are similar to the classic Tater Tot casserole recipe, but the blogger wanted to create a real cheeseburger experience. Instead of soup to season the ground beef, the beef is mixed with ketchup and mustard. It's then layered in a baking dish with onion, cheese, and tots and then baked. When it's golden brown on top, it's ready for pickles, lettuce, and tomatoes for serving.
Chicken Ranch Tater Tot Casserole
While Tater Tots are the star of this casserole, rotisserie chicken and cream of chicken soup are the supporting ingredients that call you back for seconds. Prep time is minimal and it doesn't require a lot of effort for an easy dinner the whole family will enjoy.
Tater Tot Chili Dog Casserole
What makes this recipe so great is that it's something kids love to eat and it's so easy they can make it themselves (with supervision, of course). All the ingredients are in the title (except for cheese) and if the kids are cooking they'll only need
the sous chef Mom to step in to cut up the hot dogs and work the oven.
Loaded Tater Tot Breakfast Casserole
This recipe had me at "loaded" because that's just a way to wrap sour cream, cheddar cheese, and potatoes into one word. But this one's not just spuds and dairy — it also mixes in bacon and sausage. It's definitely a special occasion casserole, but it might be a contender for 'family favorite' at your next holiday gathering.
Kicked-Up Tater Tot Hotdish
The Pioneer Woman says "hotdish" is Minnesotan for "casserole." This recipe is a bit more involved, so it may graduate from weeknight dinner to weekend feast. Sliced top sirloin is complemented by onions and peppers, spiced by poblano and jalapeño peppers, a potpourri of vegetables, a medley of sauces, plenty of sour cream and cheese, and tots. It's Pioneer Woman-approved, so you know it's worth the work.
Mexican Tater Tot Casserole
You can add this one to your spicy dinner recipe collection. It's kind of like a taco in Tater Tot casserole form. The beef mixture calls for taco seasoning along with enchilada sauce but the spice is tempered by black beans and corn. All of that is topped with tots and cheese before being baked.
Buffalo Chicken Tater Tot Casserole
Sometimes comfort food means being able to prep something in five minutes, and that's all that's required for this recipe. There's not much to it — cooked chicken, tots, ranch seasoning, buffalo sauce, sour cream, and cheese.
Tater Tot and Bratwurst Casserole
This recipe was designed for potlucks — it's a dish so wild you just have to share it. It starts with a layer of sauerkraut followed by a layer of sliced brats, then tots and cheese. So easy and so unique that it's a must-make dish.
